We sat down this week and completely nerded with Colgate MBB Head Coach, Matt Langel. Fresh off leading the Raiders to their third NCAA appearance in the last four years, Coach Langel explored a range of interesting topics and gave some great insight into how he views teaching one of the most efficient offenses in the country.
“We try and teach these guys quick decisions to get to the next action. It doesn’t mean that we failed in our first attempt it’s just the defense is forcing us to the next action. Make them guard the next action, whatever it is. And it gives us another chance to read the defense and the defense another chance to make a mistake. If you only give the defense one chance to make a mistake, most teams can guard you. If you make them have 3, 4, 5, 6 chances to make a mistake in a possession, it’s harder. It’s much harder to be flawless.” –Matt Langel on the benefits of multiple actions
Coach Langel was terrific in breaking down his thoughts and teaching points on “three player actions” including reads, decisions, and much more.
Along with this conversation, we also dove headfirst into the areas of:
- “Pre-Practice” drills and the first 10 minutes of practice
- And during the always fun “Start, Sub, or Sit?!” we discuss defending great shooters, Benedict Arnold, and much more!
