Best of the Film Room

This year we began putting out “Film Room” edits along with the release of the podcast to visually highlight some of the concepts discussed during the podcast. Here are some of our favorites from the players we interviewed this year titled “The Players’ Voice”…

???? Sue Bird – Transition Passing

“Sue Bird stresses the importance of simultaneously pushing the ball and assessing the defense on the outlet catch, putting herself in position to make the full court pass if available.”

Pair with: Sue Bird explaining how she uses her eyes to manipulate the defense in the PnR.

???? Kyle Hines – Playing in the Short Roll

“Kyle Hines demonstrates how knowing his PnR spacing and reading where the tag will come from allows him to make the appropriate read out of the short roll.”

Pair with: For more on Kyle Hines, listen to how he Defends on the Perimeter & see how he can be used in the Inverted Ballscreen (Thanks Coach Toppert for the assist).

Understanding the Tag

???? Alec Peters – Transition Empty 1-4 PnR

Alec Peters details the finer points of why an empty side PnR is so difficult to defend. The reluctancy of the defense to switch early in transition. Why if the the big spaces on the perimeter and the guard can pinch the gap, he should be receiving an open shot on the pop.”

Pair with: Alec Peters explaining how knowing who the screen is for, determines where and how he sets the screen.

Pinching the Gap & Spacing
Pinching the Gap & Spacing

In the same fashion as “The Players’ Voice”, here are some of our favorite “Film Room” segments from the terrific coaches we had a chance to interview this year…

???? Igor Milicic – Hedging with the Bigs

Coach Milicic explains the finer details of how he expects his bigs to hedge. On the first step, presenting themselves and having contact with the screener. On the second step, sliding laterally and swinging with his outside hand to force a ‘protect dribble.'”

Pair with: For more on Coach Milicic, view our Deep Dive Breakdown on his Matchup 2-3 Zone.

1st & 2nd Steps

???? Andrea Trinchieri – Shooter Rule

Coach Trinchieri explains his PnR Cutting philosophy. The better shooter stays, the other player cuts. Prefering more of a banana cut from the 45, so the cutter will find and screen the defender of the shooter.”

Pair with: Our two part Breakdown on Cutting around the PnR, Part I & Part II.

Banana Cut

???? Brooke Wyckoff – The Reverse Seal

Coach Wyckoff details how they teach their post players to reverse seal on the High-Low. Building a wall with their arms and having your chest completely to the opposite sideline.”

Pair With: Florida St. use of the RIP screen to set up their High-Low.

Building a Wall

???? Tom Thibodeau – Corner Offensive Rebounding

“As Coach Thibodeau explains, ‘there is a tendency for the corner defender to turn and stare versus turn and check. This can lead to easy scores and kick out threes.'”

Pair With: Our Deep Dive Breakdown on Aaron Fearne’s Tagging Up Offensive Rebounding system.

Scores & Kick Out 3s

???? Eric Olen – Press Break 3’s

“Generating open shots in the half court can be difficult. If teams are going to press 90 feet away, Coach Olen wants his players to be aggressive against the press and look for the open 3-pt shot.”

Pair With: Our Deep Dive Breakdown on Coach Olen’s Flow Offense with UC San Diego.

???? Brad Stevens – Blitzing the Spanish PnR & Effective Traps

Coach Stevens defines a parameter of a good trap. Not getting split or allowing the ballhandler to turn the corner, and trapping with high hands to force hangtime passes.”

Pair With: Our Deep Dive Breakdown of Coach Dusko Ivanovic’s Trapping PnR Defense.

High Hands & Hangtime Passes

???? Zico Coronel – Attacking the Switch

Coach Coronel explaining the advantages they generated by flowing first thru their 2nd side action before attacking the mismatch generated from the PnR switch.”

Pair With: Our Deep Dive Breakdown on strategies teams will use to Attack the Switch in the PnR.
