The PNR “Extra Pass”

In the spirit of giving, we’re taking a look at a simple concept that has major benefits, the PNR “Extra Pass”.

What is it? The PNR “Extra Pass” is when an offense makes two quick passes to the corner at the point of the screen and attacks through a closeout. Here’s a look…

Zooming In: Unlike a normal PNR, where the ballhandler is the one trying to create the advantage off the dribble, in this “Extra Pass” action the ballhandler moves the ball before or right at the point of the screen to take advantage of the defense shifting into their Tag responsibilities. The quick “extra pass” to the corner then gives the offense either a 1) great look at a three, or 2) a chance to attack the closeout

(Another action that is effect when the offense moves the ball ahead of the PNR is the “Stampede Action”, which you can take a look at HERE).

The closeout to the corner is often an awkward one for the defense. Most closeout drills work on the closeout taking place at the wing or the top of the key where the defender can try and “square up” the offensive player. In contrast, when the ball is swung with a quick “extra pass” the corner closeout is “unsquare” because that corner defender is “higher in the gap” when the ball is at the wing/slot.

With that in mind, on the quick “extra pass” to the corner the offense can attack the top foot of the closeout defender by either ripping back middle…

Or by attacking baseline…

Zooming back out for a second, this “extra pass” can be used against any type of PNR defense, but is particularly effect against the Hedge or Switch as both of those coverages require more help from the defenders not in the PNR. Here’s a look at how the “extra pass” catches the corner defender in a long closeout after sinking in to help after a switch…
