Slappin’ Glass travels to Spain in this conversation with Acunsa GBC Forward, Mike Carlson. The trio deep-dive into bridging disconnect between players and coaches when it comes to knowledge transfer, developing PNR IQ, screening concepts, creating synergy with guards in a PNR, and talk siestas, analytics, and the Mikan Drill during “Start, Sub, or Sit?!”.
Mike Carlson: Inside the Episode
Some of our favorite conversations on the podcast in the past year have been with current players. From Sam Dekker, to Mike Roll and Frantz Massenat, we enjoy diving into the thoughts and mindsets of those that are on the floor. We had the chance to sit down with another European pro this week in our conversation with Mike Carlson, a forward with Acunsa GCB in Spain’s ACB. We discuss developing PNR IQ, creating synergy with guards in a PNR, the Mikan Drill, siestas, and a lot more.
As you’ll hear in the episode, Mike is a very thoughtful guy when it comes to the game of basketball and as an added bonus to the episode, Mike wrote an article called “The Disconnect”, in which he talks about bridging the gap and creating a sense of synergy between coaches and players when it comes to teaching the game of basketball. A highlight includes…
“Thinking the game is not playing the game. Evaluating situations and coming up with strategies is what happens beforehand. That is an active process through discussion as well as trial and error…while playing it is necessary to have instincts and a feel for the situation. Those traits can be trained. Players should understand what options are available to them and train to consistently make good, aggressive reads with proper timing. That is not a simple concept. It is not solely made up of “If – Then” scenarios. It is dynamic. It is constant. It is a skill. And it needs to be progressively developed over time.” – Mike Carlson
